The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore sucks

tns_hero

I gave this show a shot but the fact is, it sucks and isn’t funny.

Critics are fellating it yet the people have a starkly different take. The Nightly Show sucks ass. Larry Wilmore is taking over Stephen Colbert’s timeslot in this daily visit into the world of the news while trying to make people laugh. Only one problem – this isn’t funny. I couldn’t bring myself to laugh at anything during any of the episodes I watched. At one point, I found myself actually pissed off. This guy isn’t funny at all. He’s trying to be and the “audience” or laugh track or whatever it is – they’re sheep. They’d laugh at a sign telling them to…oh wait.

Comedy Central's

Don’t just take my word for it, though. Some users had this to say, from Metacritic.

This is completely unwatchable. Larry is just not a likeable character, but more importantly is unable to be funny.

After a couple weeks I still have not seen anything funny on this show. Larry Willmore seems uncomfortable. The guests I have seen were neither funny nor informed. The entire show feels awkward.

This show is totally unwatchable. I thought maybe I was being to hard on it because Colbert was genius so I continued to give it a chance. Each show is as bad or worse than the previous. Comedy Central, pull the plug. You can do better than this.

The statement on the show feeling awkward is perfect. It truly does. Has this guy been on TV before? I get it, he used to guest host The Daily Show but he is a nervous wreck on this shit and I am telling you, the show is shit.

Update:

Months after I wrote this review, the show has continued to suck. There is no uptick in sight. The show is painful – and I’m cool with more liberal-minded shows (I take jabs at liberals for fun sometimes, because if you only make fun of the other side, you lose meaning to people who think you can’t handle the heat).

I want to elaborate on why I hate this show. It is lazy. It is unoriginal. The panel discussion amounts to an easy-way-out to fill a segment and it ends up being neither interesting nor informative. And as for humor, well, it is especially devoid of that.

Wilmore’s opening anchor moments, which suck, are the best parts of the show.

The show also gives a voice to anti-vaxxers, Glenn Beck personalities and people who don’t deserve to be on television. Unfortunately, this show, itself, does not deserve to be on TV either.

Check out some of the other TV shows that blow. Or movies. Or video games. We play hard ball here.

  1. Comedy Central tried desperately to replace Colbert, but the fact is; Wilmore is a one trick pony with his “comedy”. Basically, ithe majority of the show is based on race, and they squeeze every little bit out of it they can. Wilmore tries to do the deadpan delivery with eyebrows raised and snarky comments, but he’s no Colbert, or Stewart for that matter. He’s boring as hell and sucks as a comedian.

    • I tried to give this show a chance but no more. I’ve watched maybe six full episodes and tried to watch another half-dozen but tuned out early due to lack of humor. I haven’t laughed once out loud at anything Larry Wilmore had to say.
I have been spoiled by the one-two punch of “The Daily Show” and “Colbert Report”.
Come to think of it…. I never laughed at any segment Larry Wilmore did as a correspondent on “The Daily Show”.
This show is gone as soon as Stewart retires if not sooner. The ratings must be tanking and it ain’t gonna get any better.

      Wilmore can do is lim

  2. The Rotten Tomatoes critics’ reviews of ‘The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore’ are bewildering to say that least. I’ve tried to watch it, but it’s extremely painful. The show isn’t funny, it’s boring. The Mars episode totally annoyed me. Wilmore interrupted his only informed guest so he could continue his lame joke about a subject that had been debunked.

Most of his panel guests know nothing about the topics they are discussing. And they are more tedious than amusing. If I want to hear a bunch of uninformed people speculate and whine I’ll go to the beauty shop.

After much searching I finally found a site that keeps track of ‘The Nightly Show’s’ downward ratings spiral. Here is Tuesday’s rates: http://www.showbuzzdaily.com/articles/showbuzzdailys-top-25-tuesday-cable-originals-3-3-2015.html I believe his first show was around 963K, but now it’s down to 673K.

    • A true contribution, thank you for this post. I can’t believe people are giving him a pass, either. It really exposes so many critics as hacks who will like anything. I get that I’m on the other end of that spectrum, but even if I was writing reviews for an objective outlet (I have), I would be honest. And honestly, I think the show is just awful.

He is a bore to watch, and his jokes are the bottom of the barrell photoshop humor bs used on The Daily Show, without the energy and insight John has. And his correspondents are total bush league, cringe worthy. I’m afraid John’s new replacement Trevor Noah is also a trainwreck…went from the best hour on TV to total shit.

Daily show even has that dreadlock’ed black bitch who constantly says racist things against whites and the uber liberal hipster audience just claps it up. One of Colbert’s last shows had some Simian guy who wrote a racist movie called “Dear White People” and he even said during the interview that white people “have no culture” and the audience loved it. Pathetic and sad what the super liberal youth is becoming.

    • you said it perfectly. I am so tired of white people catching flak just for being white. If people really want racism to disapear they need to stop talking about it so much and bringing up things in the past that dont matter anymore. We cant move forward unless we let go of the past. Larry wilmore is just some smug black guy who’s show revolves around hating on white people and making black people seem like they do no wrong. Im so sick of the white race being labeled as the “evil” race for shit that happened before most of us were even alive. I live in new york and their is so much more racism towards white people by minoritys then the other way around but nobody ever talks about that. Shows like this piece of shit slows the prgress of us moving forward as a society towards forgiveness and acceptence. I have no problem towards any race, i just dont think it is fair that white people have to take these attacks on the chin and walk away because of the racial guilt that we are forced to deal with. It’s time to stop blaming and pointing fingures and just accept that their will always be racism in the world no matter how much progress is made but the best way to deal with it is to ignore it. The best way to show someone they cant hurt you with words is to not be hurt by their words. A persons reaction to something is the only thing that gives what any weight. Being upset by a racist comment shows that you are an insecure person. If you are not insecure, then nothing anyone says will upset you. Please get this guy off TV. Hes a hipocrit. He talks shit about white people, meanwile he probably blew john staurt and 10 other white guys to get the show. Thats the only way i can think of to how this guy got his show. Its not funny get rid of it comedy central!

After watching Stuart/Colbert for years and the Tonight show for decades I have come to the realization that late night television is gone. Stuart has a couple of shows left and then late night is officially dead. I could not bring myself to watch Fallon nor Wilmore.

  9. This show just makes me mad to watch. I loved Colbert so much, and this is the drivel they replace him with? The Nightly Show sucks because it’s not genuine. It’s the product of white liberal guilt. It’s really Jon Stewart’s baby, because he got to have the say over what replaced Steven. He wanted to spotlight issues of race in America, but seems to have forgotten that Comedy Central is foremost a humor channel. In the end, I don’t watch shows like TDS and Colbert to be informed. Informing is just a fringe benefit. So many years of critics hailing TDS finally went to Jon’s head, and the end result is the painfully unfunny Nightly Show.

When I learned he was behind TNS’s creation, I knew Jon had fallen off. No wonder he’s stepping down. He’s lost his touch. Wilmore is ratings poison, and his show frequently gets stomped in the 18-49 male demo by Bill O’Reilly. Really. That means people would rather watch the guy Colbert was satirizing than the guy who replaced Colbert.

I’m sorry to come barging into your blog with my rant. Unfortunately, the shills are everywhere defending this turd of a program. I googled “Nightly Show sucks” and got this page. Like you said, critics are afraid to give Wilmore what he deserves. No one will talk about the fact that fully half of TDS viewers tune out Larry’s show. All I hear is crap like “still finding his footing”. Shouldn’t he have found it by now? Wilmore’s writers whipsaw back and forth with format changes like a crew of world-class RMS Titanic deck chair re-arrangers. Since Stewart’s praise is probably the only thing keeping TNS on the air, I have to wonder if it will persist after he retires. Let’s hope not.

      • Yes, I’m familiar with his “work” on the Daily Show, if you can call it that. I’m absolutely dreading him taking over. It’s led me to consider removing my cable subscription since TDS is the only show I watch regularly.

I have a feeling that the Noah appointment was less about advancing the black race and more about getting a guy who would work for pennies. Any of the other TDS talent would have commanded a bigger salary. Trevor was purportedly last on the list of people they looked at, ie everyone else didn’t want to do it for whatever pittance CC was offering. You’ll notice that Jessica Williams made some weird comment about her not being experienced enough to take on hosting duties right around the time Noah’s contract would have been being discussed. Jason Jones and Sam Bee, two logical choices due to experience, left abruptly for their own projects, despite Jones hinting back during the time he temporarily took over for Jon that he had stuck around all those years for a chance to host. My guess is that CC didn’t want to pay him Jon Stewart money, or at least the scaled salary his experience would have demanded.

        • I’m glad someone mentioned Jessica Williams – but why not more individuals. Jessica Williams started off badly (like all new correspondents) but became one of the best correspondents to date with Jason Jones and Sam Bee. Trevor seems to be an odd choice because he lacked as much experience as the others at the Daily show (maybe that’s why he was chosen? To change the show?). Nothing stays the same, but I feel he had better choices. Also Larry Wilmore is just not funny, nor his show very informative. His opening is the best of the show, and then the round table conversation is much, much worse. I find that I can’t care at all about the random guests he has on – they have NOTHING good or informed to say about almost any issue. Its like listening to opinions everyone has during a round table discussion in high school, or beginning intro courses at college. All are just opinions with no substance – and Wilmore always has to interject some idiotic joke in between.

Also, I can’t really agree with everyone here about how the show ONLY needs to be funny. John Oliver’s show is actually mostly interesting for the insight instead of the comedy. It IS funny, but its more informative than funny. Larry Wilmores show is neither informative nor funny.

On race: Its an important mention that needs to be talked about but I fear its not about racism in general – its always about racist whites (never including other nationalities.) Do we really think that whites are the only racists? For example, take this test https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/user/agg/blindspot/tablet.htm

Everyone is somewhat racist toward a certain group of people – and we should talk about race, not just whites against blacks (I admit this is a large issue). Anyway… I’m running on. Yes the show isn’t funny and I’m glad I’ve found those that agree :D

The conversations that the panelists have are always “meh.” The panelists usually only scratch the surface of the various topics, and sometimes they don’t scratch it at all. Also, most of the panelists appear to know very little about the topic on which they speak.

    So disappointed.

  11. Oh thank god, I thought I was the only one.

The Nightly Show is absolutely PAINFUL to watch, and it’s officially lost me. Larry Wilmore has been funny before on The Daily Show, and I honestly thought he could make the transition to 11:30. After the first few weeks I began to see that not only he couldn’t make the leap, but his surrounding cast of writers and contributors were rank amateurs, and that’s being kind. That Shenaz what ever her name is, is not funny, and the bits come off feeling forced.

But the worst part is the round table format. Stephen Colbert was such a great interviewer that I’m spoiled by his skill, but Larry surrounds what ever guests he has on with his contributors, an “expert” and the proverbial other guy, none of whom are interesting or have anything to say. It’s a comedy program that’s trying hard to be a news program, and that’s where it’s failing.

As for Trevor Noah, I’ve been reading that Comedy Central didn’t even audition him (they didn’t even audition Samantha Bee or Jason Jones either), and just “selected” him because he checked off the marks on their list. Their words not mine. And he’s not funny either. He’s had three appearances on The Daily Show, and they were all awkward, stiff, and two bombed outright while one was only mildly amusing. I thought for sure they’d never invite him back, and then I wake up and see they turned over the show to him???? A lot of people were saying “watch his stand up, he’s hysterical”. So I did, and now I feel he’s even LESS qualified to take over The Daily Show, if that’s even possible. He’s doing the same AIDS jokes Eddie Murphy did thirty years ago, and the same Africa jokes Richard Pryor did FORTY years ago. Even his more recent references like hip hop nobody has been doing since the late 90’s.

With Jon Stewart leaving and handing his show to such a lack luster talent, and Larry Wilmore’s ship steadily sinking, there won’t be much reason to watch Comedy Central soon.

  12. He sucks. His show sucks. I, like many others, gave him the benefit of the doubt until the show with Common (rapper) aired. I have nothing against Common, but he is the only guest whom I remember his name. The panel was all black except one white guy. The Michael Brown case was brought up and like any terrible talk show, the view was totally one sided. Instead of having people of differing views expressing their opinions, every single guest agreed the police officer was not only wrong, but a racist. No facts pertaining to the case were discussed. The worst part was the token white guy denouncing his race to further Larry’s (and comedy central’s) agenda. Since that episode aired, I cannot change the channel fast enough.

        • Am I correct in guessing that you voted for obama?

Please enlighten me as to what he has accomplished?

The narrative provided by Obama and his unconditional fans in the media (like Bill Maher) is that the economy is doing great…GDP is on a dramatic rise… unemployment is way down…healthcare costs are down…and Obama has lowered the deficit. These are the same lies told by every Democratic member of Congress, here is how you debunk them.

First the economy is not “recovering” or “healthy” for anyone but corporate elite, billionaires, bankers and Wall Street. Main Street and small business are dying. The American middle class is being murdered. For the first time in history our middle class is no longer number one in the world – Canada’s is. For the first time in history more businesses are failing each day than opening. For the first time in history there are more people on welfare, food stamps and other handouts than working in the private sector. We have the lowest workforce participation rate in history. Almost 100 million working-age Americans aren’t working. 107 million Americans are on some form of welfare. This is Obama’s definition of success? This cannot go unchallenged by GOP leaders.

Obama’s supporters claim healthcare costs are down while GDP is up. Really? Here are the facts. Health insurance premiums have gone up more in the past year than in the 8 years prior to Obamacare combined. And that is precisely why GDP was up. Almost the entire increase in 3rd quarter GDP was fueled by the massive increase in healthcare costs due to Obamacare.

So let me get this scam correctly. Obama’s voters get “free” healthcare, while middle class America and small business gets bankrupted with the huge bill. Our health insurance premiums are skyrocketing, destroying our quality of life, and Obama calls that proof that GDP is up. That’s an achievement?

The GOP needs to attack aggressively. The idea that GDP is rising because of higher healthcare costs that are bankrupting middle class Americans, is not a reason to celebrate.

But wait, the lies get bigger. If the GDP increase for one quarter was primarily produced by increased healthcare spending, then how can Obama’s defenders claim that healthcare spending is down? Where did they get that lie from? Jonathan Gruber? The left just makes up lies – and no one challenges them. My health insurance bill went from $500 per month to $1700 under Obama. Challenge these lies. This message will resonate with middle class consumers (and voters).

Next Obama’s defenders claim unemployment is down. How could it be down if the workforce participation rate is the lowest in history? The answer is fraud. The government doesn’t count the people no longer looking for jobs…or who don’t want a job (who would rather sit home collecting welfare). True unemployment is at Great Depression levels.

Worse, the jobs being created are crappy, low wage, part-time jobs. Can you imagine what liberals would say if a white Republican was president and every job created was flipping burgers, mowing lawns or cleaning toilets? They’d say he was trapping minorities in a life of poverty and hopelessness. But a black liberal president receives congratulations. Amazing.

Democrats also crow about the stock market under Obama. Republicans go along with this narrative. Well a rising stock market based on good news and positive economic fundamentals would be great. But a rising stock market based on fake money printing by the Fed, misleading economic stats and massive debt is not so great. Actually it’s a tragedy. Our stock market under Obama resembles the sub-prime mortgage crisis. It’s a debt bubble about to pop.

The stock market is up because Obama has added $8 trillion in debt. This is the world’s largest Ponzi scheme. We’ve printed trillions in fake dollars to make the stock market go up for the corporate elite (Obama’s biggest donors), to prop up union pension funds (to benefit Obama’s biggest union supporters), and to pay for 107 million Americans on welfare and food stamps (Obama’s most loyal voters). But the mountain of debt is like a credit card credit line that will soon explode, destroying our country and our children’s future. Every politician who supported it should be in jail.

Anyone can use credit cards and mortgages they can’t afford to look like they’re rich. But when the bill comes due, the whole scheme comes crashing down. America under Obama is one big fraud. The “prosperity” is a mirage, propped up by debt. We are living on borrowed credit.

Debt is a cancer that kills every country it has ever touched. Study ancient Greece, or the Roman Empire. Or ask Venezuela. They are following the exact Obama game plan. They now have massive unrest, starving citizens, food and toilet paper shortages…and the highest stock market in history!

Obama has corrupted and destroyed the system. It’s rigged to make the stock market go up, while hiding the fact that he’s piling up the most debt in world history, mortgaging our future, destroying the middle class, and driving most of the workforce into poverty and government dependency.

Finally there’s the lie that Obama has reduced the deficit. Well this fantastic “reduced” deficit is still higher than the highest deficit under Bush. But let’s give credit, where credit is due. The deficit is down due to you and me-the taxpayers. Obama pushed through the highest tax increases in history. We’re all paying much higher taxes. That’s why the deficit is down. How is that an achievement?

Middle class America has been fleeced so Obama can brag he’s reduced the deficit. Is the GOP really this stupid? They can’t figure this out? Higher taxes have produced new government revenue, which has reduced the deficit. That’s not an achievement, it’s a rip off.

The entire Obama economic “recovery” is a lie. It’s all based on lies, misrepresentations, in some cases pure fraud, higher taxes, massive debt, and on the income redistribution of money from the middle class to the poor and the corporate elite. The rest of us are either drowning, or hanging on for dear life.

Now it’s time for the GOP to go on the offensive. It’s time to debunk the narrative that Obama has produced a “recovery.” If we don’t make that case, get ready for President Hillary Clinton.

  13. TNS is pathetic, and quite frankly racist (against black people) ! Now full disclosure I am about as european as they get, but I am, also, very liberal politically and have nothing but respect for black people. But the show is racist! It presents a binary notion of race, perpetuating an ‘us against them’ mentality. The show functions solely on white guilt, alienating an audience that may be sympathetic to their cause. Lets face it, statistically speaking the majority of Americans are white, but not all white people are racists, yes it is true there are some despicable people who are racist, but not all are! Nobody can change their race, black or white and nobody deserves to be made to feel ashamed. Now I have complete respect for black people, and I harbour the deepest sympathies for their plight. But people with fair skin ought not to be made ashamed simply because of the actions of those before them. The show works solely on white guilt, and helps to perpetuate a divisive idea of race. The amounts of melanin in one’s skin is not a decider of who you are, no race is perfect, but at the end of the day we are all human, and we are all the same. There are bad people of every race. Larry Wilmore ought to stop presenting a onesided black and white interpretation of issues of race. He is reducing a complex convoluted issue, that concerns all of us into a petty one sided competition! RACE DOES NOT DECIDE WHO WE ARE. One joke is not enough to get by in the world of comedy. Perhaps it merely serves to give SOME white people a taste of their own medicine. Also about Jon Stewart’s replacement, I really think that the fact that both ‘replacements’ are black is just a half baked attempt to be politically correct! I really do want better representation for black people, but this is not the way to achieve it. And if they want to be politically correct (which is something I want) then why not cast Jessica Williams, she’s a woman and she’s black! Go feminism!! I also love her segments, highlight of an episode for me! If you ask me she’s much more qualified, funnier and best yet more representative of PEOPLE (women account for 50% of the pop, whereas african americans account for what, I don’t know precisely but off the top of my head, about 20% of the American pop). I don’t intend to offend anyone with this comment. XO

I wanted so much to like TNS and support Larry Wilmore though, for the life of me, I could not understand how he got a gig hosting. He is a comedy WRITER (created and won an Emmy for “The Bernie Mac Show”, from which he inexplicably and unceremoniously got the boot), not a satirist, and definitely not a telegenic personality. His bits on TDS were always hit and miss and nothing in his comportment during them suggested he possessed the magic necessary to command a nightly audience. It is a kind of magic, you know, the ability to do what Johnny, Jon, and Stephen (my personal favorite; I think he’s a comic genius) did and do. As an African American, it is nice to see the late-night field opening up and becoming more inclusive. That said, funny is funny, and incisive AND funny is a dish to be highly anticipated and delectably savored. Wilmore, as analogies go, is unappetizing and damn near inedible. I hope he finds his footing elsewhere but CC talk show host is probably going to be in his rear-view mirror soon.

I liked Larry Wilmore in his segments on The Daily Show, but I think both Comedy Central and Stewart overestimated his ability to carry a show on his own. With Colbert there was no denying his talent. Colbert is such a talented guy he can do just about anything, and do it well. Larry Wilmore on the other hand doesn’t have that kind of talent, and probably never will.

Part of the show’s problem (if not ENTIRELY the show’s problem) is that it’s trying to hard to be “news”. There are already way too many of those. I don’t want to see another panel discussion. If I did I’d turn over to MSNBC or CNN. I want to see a COMEDY program first and foremost.

What gets me is that Lewis Black recently said that Comedy Central didn’t even offer him an audition just as a courtesy. “Hey Lew, Jon is leaving soon, you want to audition for the hosting job?”. They didn’t even offer an audition to Samantha Bee or Jason Jones as well. From what I’ve read, neither was Trevor Noah. Which has me questioning the vetting process, if there is one. Did they select Larry Wilmore and then attempt to build a show around him, without first seeing if he could carry a program like his? Or did someone honestly feel he was best qualified, based on his previous work?

I really am dreading the day when Jon Stewart leaves and we’ll be stuck with Wilmore and Trevor Noah, another comic that many keep insisting that he’s “hysterical” but I just don’t see it. From what I’ve seen with many already questioning Noah’s qualifications, he may not last long as host of The Daily Show, especially if Stewart’s writing staff leaves with him. I can’t help but think they’ll let Larry Wilmore and Trevor Noah either go down with the ship, or “allow” them to quit. Either way, I don’t see them lasting for very long.

And all of the liberals bend over backwards to try to be “down with the cause” and to show everyone they “get it.” So they pretend to like this boring show and keep watching it even though it sucks. I only watched one episode and knew there was no reason to ever go back.

If something interesting should happen to happen, I’ll catch it on a YouTube clip. Doubtfully this will ever happen. Never gonna happen. Not happening. After watching the first five minutes today, I decided I could take it no more. It’s not funny and the guest are almost always ill informed. The show won’t be on much longer at this rate. Comedy Central really dropped the ball when they lost Stephen and soon Jon. These shows were the best thing on TV. I won’t be watching Larry Whitemoore anymore. Good bye.

Dear Larry Wilmore [The Tonight Show]

I am NO fan of the Kardashians but I just watched your episode long attack of Bruce Jenner and his transition [a mental, sexually insular, dimorphic issue]. You don’t understand it, I don’t understand it… a lot of people will not understand it but I found your show [or this episode] incredibly offensive, devoid of humour and uneducated… I did not chuckle once and I’m the twat that will laugh at a funeral… you managed to offend several demographics all for the sake of a few jokes, jokes that flat lined anyway.

I will not watch your bully boy show again… Last time I seen that kind of easy targeting was David Letterman’s attack on Lindsay Lohan. It’s hate mongering, lacking in sensitivity and ignorant in its approach.

I am very disappointed as you are promoting this sort of hate on you show for cheap thrills… If you want to go for the Kardashian’s do so all day long but don’t go for the one serious issue that family have produced… finally!

I think the LGBT community should boycott or take you down… personally I thought it pathetic and cheap, real cheap.
N-Word… you mean NIGGER right..? saying the N-Word is the same thing, just hidden behind a cowardly facade. TRANNY is NOT the same as the N-Word and never has been… a few straight people cannot lay that law or push their own beliefs or agendas onto a community they do not comprehend, one that does not want your input or care to be dragged [excuse the pun] into PC nonsense… They don’t care what the hetro-sexual community think of them and rightfully so… They had enough black eyes to get over other unimportant opinions of them.

Tranny is tranny… its a word that has been owned and embraced as long as it has been used, see Rupaul for that schooling. Do not compare it to the N-word which is just a pussy way off saying NIGGER. N-Word that perpetuates a subliminal hatred that you as a black man are pushing… shame on you for your self loathing.
Your show turned my stomach and thats that I guess.

Well done and bravo to you and your moron army.

  25. all of your comments strike a chord… but i think youre missing something important… the whole channel is broken! comedy central is misognistic, among other things… and i personally believe the producers have chosen two lack luster mediocre black comedians to take the places of two of the smartest funniest guys on tv for a long long time… that the producers chose these inferior entertainers in order to make blacks look bad… yessss ….this is the best they can do lol

this weekend we lost an amazing black comedian… Marques Haynes… one of the original Harlem Globetrotters… you should go see him on youtube dribbling… theres even a movie… this guy was hilarious and yet still a superior athelete who, along with his teammates, ran circles around the competition :D

and that was back in the 50s

and of course we have a huge list of black entertainers and comedians both male and female who could actually contend with jon stewart or robert colbert on some levels ….its a real insult to not use them instead of these two they are putting on…

glad this place is here… larry has really bothered me.

    • He’s already lost 40% of Colbert’s former audience, but I have the feeling they’re going to prop him up as long as possible, especially considering when Trevor Noah takes over The Daily Show on September 28th. Honestly I don’t see the ratings getting any better, I only see them getting WORSE, especially when he doesn’t have the strong lead in that Stewart provides.

  28. Yeah…The Nightly Show is pretty awful. I tried to like it at first, but it’s awful. To be honest though, the daily show is pretty bad now too. The Colbert Show, on the other hand, was incredibly funny and i miss it. I guess at this point that whole hour of TV is just kind of like a pop culture institution at this point. The problem is that the shows just aren’t funny anymore. I imagine the audiences of these shows to be people like my mom, and uninformed kids entering the “fight the power” stages of their lives. the shows started out as comedy years back, but now they are just ultra-liberal soap boxes. Let me be very clear: I am a liberal;however, i resent the way john stewart and larry whilmore try to affect public opinion and mislead viewers while masquerading as comedy. It used to be a lot more toned down, and it was a subtle byproduct of the shows that public opinion would be influenced. Now it is blatant and transparent and annoying. Like the other day, stewart spent like 10 minutes ripping bernie sanders a new one and making him look crazy and unelectable. I presume they did this because they support hillary, or think that hillary is the only candidate who can win. Whatever the case may be, it all boils down to the same thing: it’s a form of propaganda. Which if i remember correctly used to be what the daily show stood against. Now it’s just part of the crew, just a different flavor is all. Lets face it, viewers of the daily show and the nightly show are like the liberal equivient of fox news viewers. they want/need to be told what to think. Anyways, getting back to the main point…yeah TNS is pretty damn NOT funny, boring, and contrived. At least the daily show is still funny every now and then.

    • Agreed. I’m a huge liberal and The Daily Show is borderline unwatchable now…really lame bits and low brow photoshop humor with Jon’s same old reactions to everything. The N.S. on the other hand, is completely unwatchable…it’s like they picked someone random to do a copy of the Daily Show. I don’t care at all about whatever point Larry is trying to make, and even worse it’s never funny. At least Colbert is coming back, but it’s a shame Dave is gone.

PS – Trevor Noah probably will be awful..his appearances on TDS have all been disasters.

I have a feeling Stewarts replacement Noah, will be just as bad. He wasn’t funny at all the 3 times he appeared on the show. CC just dug its own grave.

Larry isn’t funny at all and I feel like every episode they feel the need to talk about equal rights excessively and although many of the points are accurate, it’s just complete overkill. Larry isn’t funny at all and I constantly have to double – check what he says because his jokes are unbelievably stale and simply retarded. The punch lines might work on 4 year olds or low IQ who enjoy watching commercials for fun

  31. According to the Village Voice, they claim that The Nightly Show has “hit it’s stride”, which doesn’t seem possible, because how do you hit your stride when you’re just flat out HORRIBLE? The show lost me back in March. At 11:30 I would never dream of turning off Colbert, and now I have no problem jumping into Grand Theft Auto since Dave signed off. Now that he’s gone I really, REALLY miss Letterman :(

Larry lost 40% of Colbert’s former audience, and that was back in March. Now three months later, he’s lost another five percent bringing his viewership down to 45% percent lower than Colbert’s. How does Comedy Central keep justifying him having a show? if you go to his Facebook page it’s flooded with accolades, which probably means that Larry and Comedy Central are getting the most out of the money they spend on Reputation Defender. Interestingly enough the comments on the Comedy Central page about The Nightly Show are almost ALL negative, compared to The Nightly Show’s page.

Larry is trying WAY too hard to be a legit news show, and that’s still his problem. I really don’t want to see yet another panel, especially when I can see one on CNN or MSNBC. If by this time in September his audience is down 55% compared to Colbert, then are they going to pull the plug, or let him go down with the ship? Because once Colbert takes over the Late Show, I don’t see his ratings turning around.

No one is offended by being called ‘white’. ‘Black’ isn’t racist. You’re either an American or not. If your skin is black then we know your ancestors were probably from the African continent. ‘African American’ is PC bullshit and shouldn’t be accepted as a way to describe black skin. Grow up.

The obvious jokes, and the shameless attempts to create memorable, recurring catch phrases is irritating. Just every part is unbearable, especially when they bring out the round table discussions when it seems like every person is worried about their own agenda and self promotion than having any kind of intelligent conversations spiced with comedy. I do not enjoy this show.

It’s not even comedy, it’s just parroting the same old liberal lefty talking points again and again to get the same lame robotic cheering. I just don’t see how this show can last. Once Leibowitz rides off into the sunset, it’ll probably be only a matter of time for the Nightly Show. Cancellation can’t come soon enough!!!

It’s gotten to the point that I change the channel even if I’m half asleep in bed just because I don’t want him getting anymore undeserved ratings. I agree completely that the show is just not funny at all haven’t laughed a single time.

We all understand that Colbert left some huge shoes to fill but this show needs to just disappear as soon as possible. I’ve never liked Wilmore he just isn’t funny I think he would work better on a serious news channel, why they didn’t give Wyatt Cenac a show is beyond my understanding. He literally shits all over Larry when it comes to being actually funny and hell I thought this was Comedy Central people?!

  37. The writers are crap, the “guests” are staged actors. This show is so unhumorus that it is obviously pushing an agenda. All of the ways everyone feels about this show is intentional and predetermined. The show was designed to divide & conquer, aggravate & to entertain prideful low-informationed citizens and bring them to the forefront ( non-race specific ). We all need comedic relief to survive this world and to lose three cleverly scripted shows to wind up stuck with this? They don’t want us to be happy, it always works in their favor for business(s). It still being on-air is apparent they want to get people charged up and flustered and, to the ones that watch this show, pridefully misinformed.
Oh and occurring in the year of political elections, Yea, not obvious at all.

Usually when they have and actual expert on the events they are talking about the other 2 nimrods usually talk louder and interrupt the expert because their opinion differs.

Instead of having a discussion on police brutality and bringing in people on both sides of the debate you figured it would be funny to have some unheard of comedian, a rapper, and some woman who was obviously pulled away from her Feminist sjw blog. Hard to have a discussion when everyone has the same bs argument about how all cops are uneducated racist pigs *insert audience applause*.

I gave the show a chance, I really hoped for the best. But CC lost out on a huge opportunity here.

WIllmore is the only adult black man on television that isn’t completely bought off by the establishment. Of course, he’s going to talk race, race is an issue in America. Sorry if you can’t handle it, and I’m white. his guests are good, his format is fine, and the show lasts only 20 minutes, unlike Maher, whose shows feel like you got beat up after watching.

Willmore is disarming, not loud, he’s wuite witty and original with language, and he has a black perspective without being an agrny rapper. Some of his guests are idiots, but what else is new.

I don’t know what you are all smoking. Few talk shows are great, and he’s not entertaining like Letterman, but he fills an important slot for me, and my mom and gf, both white women, love him.

I covered this on my YouTube channel, and I also did one about Trevor Noah, who I think is equally flat and tedious.

    • I won’t say don’t like it if it’s your thing but for me I find the format so distasteful after so many shows of “race” this and “race” that, it’s almost auto-piloting itself. Just pluck the relatively new race thing that is out and they run with that till the next thing about race. I’m white and lean more liberal but come on you say those of us who dislike this have to be smoking something to not like this rehashed race shit monday to thursday?

Now you may have a point in that race is a issue in America but I don’t need almost 20+ minutes 4 days a week of a show to keep it in my mind when the media does a well enough job most of the time, not to mention during some of his little jokes he goes on to make “serious” points…more like short rants on a show that from what I remember should be comedy right?

So tho you may find it funny etc. I however find it just annoying to listen too. Again like in a previous post I will say I still find watching O’reily Factor funnier than Larry’s show because I can call the bullshit coming out of O’reily’s mouth and laugh but having someone like Larry who is supposed to be a comedian sit there and not be that funny is ridiculous.

  45. I am not a fan of him either. He is what I like to call a “90’s campus liberal”. Meaning he’s an adherent of the destructive mentality that was sweeping campus’s in the 1990’s, if x was bad to y in the past, y should be allowed to be bad to x now. In other words revenge racism/sexism etc etc. Deep down I think Larry hates white people too. There is a “white=evil” and “blacks can do no wrong because they were oppressed in the past” mentality about him. Plus, he’s simply not funny. Not a fan of Trevor Noah either. He’s got about 100 IQ points on Larry, but he’s just not that witty or very funny. Neither can hold a candle to their predecessors. I guess all I have left to watch is Bill Maher, who is no Jon Stewart/Colbert either, but he’s better than Larry or Noah.
